Jerry Carter has collected rare Venetian glass smalti [enamels] which he uses in his compositions. Much of the mosaic glass is no longer made. Some Venetian glass materials Carter obtained were made in single unique batches using recipes from the time of alchemists, 1400s, that were attempts to create exotic semi-precious stones.
All the Venetian glass is carefully hand-cut into various shapes. Color fields are blended by using several colors of glass, much like impressionist paintings.
Carter began using a concrete additive Laticrete TM to make his mosaics in 1983 when he made the Second Genesis Monument in the Park of Peace in Ravenna, Italy. Since that time no mosaic pieces have fallen out due to loss of holding power in the concrete mixed with laticrete.
Carter also developed light weight technology to make mosaics light enough to hang on modern plaster board walls by making fiber glass cast frames that also backed the mosaics, and by using the same aluminum honey-combe panels as NASA used, to creat mosaics using resin glues. Carter's themes for his mosaics are visually simple and visual references to his sense of time and life in space. Carter, in addition to the customary elements of composition, works with reflected light and color.

Second Genesis, The American Peace and Ecology Monument, 5.75X4M. Is part of a permanent exhibition of mosaics by contemporary artists. Second Genesis is found in the Parco Della Pace [Peace Park] in Ravenna, Italy.
Second Genesis is a venetian glass mosaic on a cast concrete free standing relief. The materials used were venetian glass from Murano, Italy and porcelain from the Arabia Factory in Helsinki, Finland. The mosaic was constructed on site by Jerry Carter who worked with highly trained professional mosaic tecnicians from Ravenna.
Second Genesis was created by an American artist, Jerry Carter, under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy, The Italian Ministry of Fine Arts and Ambience, The European Parliament, UNESCO, The European Parliament,The Region of Emilia-Romagna, The Province of Ravenna. Corporate donors included Laticrete Inc. and the Arabia Factory, Helsinki, Finland. Other donors included the Commune of Ravenna, The Episcopal Church of Washington, D.C., The Art Barn Association of Washington, D.C. and S. Epstein also of Washington, D.C. The Governors of the State of Maryland and State of Kansas gave and the President of the Region of Emilia-Romagna their political support.

Second Genesis sparkles with it's various types of reflective surfaces, giving it a shimmering aura of other worldliness. It is visual music, and presentation
of the distinctions and states of life on our planet Earth and in space.
This cosmic view presents the river of life through which the Human Being traverses through spiritual enlightenment, to evolve from the World as we know it in this state, to other states of life in other dimensions within what is seen as space.
What is not seen is implied.
The actor in Second Genesis is present in the observer who is surrounded by

Life beginnings is a hand cut Venetian glass mosaic of about 3.5 X 1.5M installed in a dining room wall over the built-in buffet. The venetian glass mosaic is on a single aluminum honeycomb panel.
Colors are graduly blended using the ancient Ravenna mosaic technique that it,s author, Jerry Carter, has employed for more than 30 years.
Carter's image in reflections, depicts the origination energy blast within which and from which all matter and life springing forth.
Angle of Fire 1.8 X 1.2 M is a mosaic of venetian glass, Finnish porcelain, pink marble and gold smalti.
It depicts a night phenomena which Jerry Carter saw as a young man in the winter about 3:30 A.M. as he was walking in deeep snow. What he saw the Earth being enveloped by brillient phosporescent white, green, pink and blue light streams. Eight Heavens. 22" X 22." Made of extruded venetian glass relief, venetian glass made from a 14th century receipe, blue gold, and clear blue glass. The frame and backing [3/8" thin ] are one piece of cast stone.
Eight Heavens is a scene from the surface of another planet with bright suns in the night sky. Glowing energy life streams in clear magents crystal extrusions float over the violet venetikan glass sea.
Magic Horse. A mosaic relief 94 X 70 CM is made entirely out of venetian glass and glass extrusions. It was made in Italy by Jerry Carterin 1971 and has been exhibited in such places as The National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C. and is the in the collection of the Pinocoteca in Ravenna, formerly in the Loggetta Lombardesca. | | | Existing. Conversation. A mosaic 24 X 32" made of Finnish Arabia Porcelain. The face and atmospheric effects are created with signatures from the back of the porcelain plates. It depicts a romantic seen in a cafe in Helsinki. The couple engage intently , over a drink, with cigarette smok enveloping them. A snow storm rages outside.
No More Mornings. A mosaic 22" X 22" of venetian glass, gold smalti, glass extursions and marble. It this poisonous work which depicts the last battle on a space platform which is breaking up in space. In the background is the now dead planet.
Copper Life Disc. 42" diameter. Cast stone wall relief, polycromed with enamels, inlayed with venetian glass. The translucency of the enamels makes the illusion of a sphere. Copper Life Disc is one of a series depicting various planetary atmospheres.
Egyptian Fetish. A mosaic 22" X 22" is made of white, piink and blue gold smalti, venetian glass, 14th Cent. type artificial semi prescious stone and marble.
Egyptian Fetish is remeniscent of the great temples to the queen.
